Oracle Trial for Pay Discrimination Begins

Image
Well, here’s something shocking concerning a huge company that lives right here in the bay. Just when you thought the world was getting better, I guess it shows you it’s true colors.  The Washington Post published an article on Oracle underpaying women and minorities by $400 million. It reported that “the Labor Department made its case in a hearing Thursday that Oracle underpaid female, Asian and black employees working in certain roles at its Silicon Valley headquarters by $401 million over the course of four years, one of the largest federal anti-discrimination cases to go before a judge.” Shocking, right?  The case will call 21 current and former employees to prove that they were paid less. Apparently, Oracle paid some women less than 20% ($37,000) compared to their male coworkers. But the case also argues that Oracle favors hiring Asians with student visas since they depend on Oracle’s sponsorship, so they could be paid less without any objection.    It’s craz

Major Gain for Women & Minorities in Television Directing

Image
Since we always hear about heartbreaking stories in the messed-up world that we live in now, it’s always good to hear some good news. So, here’s some good news for women and especially minorities!  An article by Aljazeera showed that a new record number of the 2018-2019 television episodes were directed by women or ethnic minorities. Isn’t that so wonderful? A report by the Episodic Television Director Inclusion explained that “half of all TV episodes were directed by women or African American, Asian American or Latino directors.”  Plus, in the last five years only 21% of television episodes were directed by women or minorities, but in the last year that percentage has gone up to 42.5%.  We’ve always known how hard it’s been for women and ethnic minorities to move up in the television and movie industries, so hearing something like definitely shows a good sign of progress. Nonetheless, slowly but surely, women and minorities are gaining the respect and accomplishment

Ethnic Minorities Get Paid Less Than Their White Colleagues in Research

Image
Well here’s some ridiculous news. Apparently even though we live in such modern times there’s still some incidents that are unfair.  From an article by the Independent, ethnic minorities in academics are less likely to get funding than white researchers.  This article shows that ethnic minorities are less likely to get funding than white colleagues. Apparently, on average, ethnic minorities receive grants that are lower than £100,000 compared to white colleagues. Isn’t that so ridiculous?! Moreover this research showed that white researchers are 27% more likely to receive research grants compared to their ethnic colleagues. One of the researchers, Dr. Izzy Jayasinghe, talked about how researcher councils that decide the grants look through data based on sex, disability, ethnicity, and age. Plus, researchers in 2019 & 2018 were 79% white and 13% were ethnic minorities.  Here’s one last thing; white researchers were awarded £670,000 while ethnic minorities were awa

After Elections, Boston City Council Now Dominated by Women

Image
Here’s something positive to look forward to! It feels nice to hear something so empowering and encouraging when we live in such upsetting times.  As of November 6 th , CBS Boston released the news that Boston City Council has now elected its first female majority! Isn’t that great?! Apparently, this is the first largest female majority and the most racially ethnic diversity lineup that Boston has ever seen.  After the votes on Tuesday, along with the other female candidates, Boston has elected its first Latina City Council woman. So, starting on January 13 th of 2020, the new 13-member council will have eight women and out of the eight, seven women are ethnic minorities.  This is a great achievement for not only ethnic minorities, but it’s a great victory for women. Sometimes small victories like this always make tougher times seem a little easier. Just knowing that we’re taking small steps for a greater change always feels good. Well, here’s something new. Remember, when we thought that we lived in a nation with civil rights? Well, there’s been some civil rights issues with the Vancouver Public School.  According to a news article from a local news source, in Vancouver, Washington, there’s an investigation in is conducted by the Washington Attorney General’s office towards the Vancouver Public School. Apparently, the school practices keeping out higher proportions of students of color and students with disabilities from the school. Instead, the school practices keeping their white and non-disabled peers.  A letter was received by the Attorney General’s office that the school’s discipline causes higher rates of suspension and expulsion of black, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, and Native American students. On the other hand, students with disabilities also face more punishments than the other students.  Clearly, this is violation of many state laws and civil rights laws. At the moment, th

So, just when you thought the world couldn’t get crazier hear something new. Looks like history is about to repeat itself again. When will we ever learn?  According to the Wall Street Journal, the United States is imposing visa restrictions on Chinese officials. Apparently these Chinese officials are linked to the abuse of Muslim minority groups in China’s Xinjiang region. There have been statistics that show that as many as one million people are detained in camps in China.  The article, updated on October 8th, explained that the United States has decided for visa restrictions, which will limit the ability of Chinese officials to travel to the US. By 2030, 75% of London's Student Population Will Be Ethnic Minorities

Image
Here’s something interesting to learn about the future. There’s been a new study conducted which predicts that three in four London students will be ethnic minorities. That’s actually really really interesting to hear.  There was an analysis conducted that illustrated a shift in the future of London’s demographics. According to BBC, “demographic changes and university entry rates, shows 27% of student from London will be white.”  Now, this doesn’t mean that white will all of a sudden be the smallest percentage in the London institutions, they’ll still be the largest ethnic group. Plus, the study also showed that students with African backgrounds will be at 21%, which would make them the second largest ethnic group.  But… here’s the interesting part; the study clearly stated that “based on existing evidence, we can expect a significant increase in the number of young students entering higher education by 2030, and an increase in the diversity of these students... near
