Oracle Trial for Pay Discrimination Begins

Well, here’s something shocking concerning a huge company that lives right here in the bay. Just when you thought the world was getting better, I guess it shows you it’s true colors.

The Washington Post published an article on Oracle underpaying women and minorities by $400 million. It reported that “the Labor Department made its case in a hearing Thursday that Oracle underpaid female, Asian and black employees working in certain roles at its Silicon Valley headquarters by $401 million over the course of four years, one of the largest federal anti-discrimination cases to go before a judge.” Shocking, right?

The case will call 21 current and former employees to prove that they were paid less. Apparently, Oracle paid some women less than 20% ($37,000) compared to their male coworkers. But the case also argues that Oracle favors hiring Asians with student visas since they depend on Oracle’s sponsorship, so they could be paid less without any objection.

It’s crazy how such a huge corporation is still underpaying their employees and using loopholes to make sure that their scheme stays intact.
