U.S. Restricting Visas for Chinese Official due to Abuse of Muslim Minorities
So, just when you thought the world couldn’t get crazier hear something new. Looks like history is about to repeat itself again. When will we ever learn?
According to the Wall Street Journal, the United States is imposing visa restrictions on Chinese officials. Apparently these Chinese officials are linked to the abuse of Muslim minority groups in China’s Xinjiang region. There have been statistics that show that as many as one million people are detained in camps in China.
The article, updated on October 8th, explained that the United States has decided for visa restrictions, which will limit the ability of Chinese officials to travel to the US. Moreover, the US imposed export restrictions against more than two dozen Chinese firms for having roll in these government policies against minorities.
According to the state department, the Visa restrictions will only apply to designated Chinese government and Communist party officials, which also includes their family members. According to western scholars, “more than one million Turkic Uighurs and other Muslim minorities have been arbitrarily detained in China’s Xinjiang region over the past few years.” (Wall Street Journal). The Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, stated on Twitter that “China has forcibly detained over one million Muslims in a brutal, systematic campaign to erase religion and culture in Xinjiang.”
Altogether is not much more information on this topic, there has been a muted response in Beijing wedge possibly suggests that China may be looking to narrow the scope of its negotiations with the US trade. Alas, not much more can be said at the moment.
Isn’t it crazy that after all this time one would expect people to learn from past mistakes and history; however, clearly that’s not the case. Why is it that still today people aims to erase another’s religion and culture? Is that hard to live in a world of peace and comfort?
